I need to design an experiment to determine if the flu symptoms in a population are due to a virus or bacteria. The procedure should not include overly complex tasks. The simpler the experiment, the better. All suggesions are appreciated.

I have had the flu for about a week now, it is getting really bad… I am 18 and have asthma and was a steady smoker until early May. With this flu I cant do anything! Do the symptoms lead to larger problems. For instance: If there is sinus drainage, does the drainage cause the virus to invade the lungs and/or stomach?
